Testimonials
Owner Colette has recently moved to Australia from
the UK where she worked with "Young People Speak Out"
for 6 years, enabling youths to express themselves through basic
video techniques. Many of Colettes pupils have won awards
for their projects, including an Italian children's award in
2002.
"Lead On Beaudesert Shire was very wise when
we chose to utilise the expertise from the Film Focus team. Our
young people received a lot of positive support and new skills
during our Film in Focus project and the extra assistance we
received from the team certainly helped us put our Sneak Preview
Short Film Festival plans into action. With many thank to Colette,
we are now on track to showcase an amazing variety of films in
coming years and look forward to a long and happy partnership
with the Film Focus team. I have no hesitation in recommending
any organisation that wants to engage young people in the creative
industries of film making to use Film Focus as their first choice"
- Marita Tomlinson, Lead On, Beaudesert
"I wanted to let you know that I thoroughly enjoyed
the Film focus workshop. I loved the way that you worked with
our youth group: -Teamwork -Respect for self and for each other
-Patience -Passion for doing something that you love -You made
it enjoyable and Fun -Not too serious -Professional -Taught them
valuable life skills that can be everyday -Be Creative and think
outside the box -Taught the Youth to speak about topics in a
non-threatening environment -Overall Awesome. Thanks" - Heimana, Logan PCYC
"Colette is excellent at getting young people
to try new things without leaving young people feeling vulnerable.
The group has become more confident and willing to learn new
things. Most importantly they have had fun and attendance has
been regular. Another brilliant film for young people to take
home and keep."
- Lydia Markham, Youth Worker, UK
"It was brilliant, very funny and the staff were
great."
- Gaynor, Workshop Participant

Colette also worked on larger more focused projects
with those particularly keen to follow up with training. In July/August
2002 she co-directed and edited a youth based film titled "The
Devils Claim". This project was granted a budget by 1st
Light Film Youth Scheme and enabled young local talent, discovered
through Y.P.S.O, to work with professional filmmakers. This film
won an award in Italy in 2003, was nominated for a 1st Light
award in 2004 and was screened on BBC Blast in November 2003.
But this was not her only pupil that made headlines.
A TEENAGE documentary-maker who helped to highlight
problems of vandalism around Wester Hailes is among the nominees
for the Young Edinburgh Awards. Seans documentary focused
on the play-parks and canal in Wester Hailes, highlighting youngsters
concerns over the safety of the areas set aside for them to play
in, and the vandalism they see all around them.
Sean has been nominated for the community involvement
prize, one of eight categories in the awards, which will be held
in October this year. The awards have been established by Edinburgh
City Council, in association with the Evening News, to pay tribute
to the dedication shown by youngsters in all walks of life. Colette
Valvona Healy, of Young People Speak Out, liaised with Sean on
the film and said he had been a pleasure to work with. "This
was a great project, although it required an all-hands-on-deck
approach due to the scope and ambition of the film," she
said.
